5 pages in length. Black Power was a movement in the mid 1960's that sought to afford Blacks to opportunity to "define the world in their own terms" (Hiltz et al, 1998). Often misconstrued as a movement against Whites rather than for Black progress, Black Power was disseminated throughout the population by way of outspoken individuals and organizations via literature, popular culture and aggressive behavior. This precedence-setting movement was appealing to young urban youths because it empowered them with a sense of self that had not heretofore existed in the Black population; historically having to bow to White mandate, this was a time for Blacks of all ages to stand up for what they believed was right for their race. Black Women and their Reactions to Slavery

These reactions varied from complete passivity, to outright violence, to societal action. This paper analyzes the stories related in “Celia, a Slave: A True Story”, “Sojourner Truth : A Life, a Symbol” and “A Black Woman's Civil War Memoirs” to emphasize that some reactions were obviously more effective than others in bringing about positive change. These reactions were shaped not only by the institution of slavery, however, but by the individual circumstances and experiences of individual women and those with whom she interacted.
