Sport Psychology: Motivation in Sports and Soccer
[ send me this essay ]
This is a 7 page paper discussing motivation in sport with examples from soccer. Motivation in sport is unique in regards to the study of motivation in psychology as many factors which seem to motivate athletes to increase perceived competence and performance are not the same as those recorded in other studies outside of the sport environment. Researchers A.V. Carron and R.H. Cox have compiled collections of motivational models which can be applied within the sport setting. While much of the research can be applied to athletes who compete on an individual level, much of it has also been applied to the team environment. Several research studies in the area of junior soccer have revealed that expectations of others and perceived self-control are high motivators in relation to perceived competence and performance. While many factors such as intrinsic self-confidence are required for high anxiety level components of the game, such as penalty shots, several other components related to expectations of others such as audience support are more consistent indicators of motivation in the sport of soccer.
