Poverty and Commerce in Eastern Indonesia

This 7 page paper provides an overview of the basic economic issues and changes in 16th and 17th century Indonesia, with a specific view of Eastern Indonesia (Maluku, Banda and Makassar), though an assessment of Anthony Reid's Southeast Asia in the Age of Commerce. This paper recognizes that urbanization, the movement towards stronger religous commitment and the efforts to build a greater centralized monarchy were all factors caused by and in response to the growth of trade and European intrusion.
