Black Equality: Reconstruction to the Present

An 8 page assessment of the struggle for black equality. Tracing key historical developments, the author demonstrates that the Civil Rights Movement only succeeded in propelling blacks to the same level they had briefly attained in the 1870’s, a position of at least semi-equality. The opinions as to the extent of true equality in our country today, however, vary radically. Many blacks point to such phenomena as police brutality and racial profiling as evidence that equality has yet to be achieved. These attempts centered of course around the Civil Rights movement and friction between blacks and whites which continue to exist to this day. This paper presents the events which occurred throughout history from the perspective of its impact on the life of a fictional family of blacks who lived from the time of slavery to the present.
