Martin Block coined the term disc jockey after he suggested in 1935 that his radio station play recorded music as they waited for news of the Lindberg kidnapping trial, creating an industry. Today's disc jockeys tend to meet the stars as the fans do, but music hopefuls in Block's time auditioned for him and his colleagues.
