Does Freedom of the Press Go Too Far?
[ send me this paper ]
This 4 page report discusses the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution and questions whether or not the media has pushed too far in terms of what is “appropriate.” The public response to what it has come to see as irresponsible journalism and commentators who disseminate hate, misinformation, and biased judgment, has been something of a backlash against the First Amendment’s guarantee to the right of free speech. And yet, there is also significant concern that if a voice one disagrees with is silenced, there is no security that an agreed-with voice will not also be silenced. Bibliography lists 21 sources.

El Universal
[ send me this paper ]
A 5 page paper evaluating the major newspaper of Caracas, Venezuela. El Universal is a newspaper that, as most newspapers are, is a venue for reporting local events and news. It is also more, however. The publication appears to be one that means to serve the local community, but also a wider geographical range. It reports news from around the world as should any good newspaper, but it also carries stories that have a more collectively personal significance. The paper discusses the newspaper’s concept, sections, language, pictures and advertising. Bibliography lists 4 sources.

Election 2000
[ send me this paper ]
A 17 page paper discussing the media's treatment of the campaign and its two leading candidates, Al Gore and George W. Bush. The purpose of the paper is to determine whether the media shifts its support to the "underdog" as determined by the polls, by examining both the basis of journalism and examples of articles published at varying times throughout the campaign. The paper concludes that journalists do not present the "full, fair and accurate" picture of facts as they exist, but of facts taken in the context of the philosophies of John Rawls, who maintains that fairness lies in basing need on the most disadvantaged of the society. The paper demonstrates bias in the published accounts, but bias based on philosophy rather than through overt intent. Bibliography lists 17 sources.
