Technological advances like the advent of the car, camera and electricity heralded new heights of modernization. The invention of the camera and dwindling patronage signaled a change in the role of artists in society. Art was a reflection of society. Abstract art evolved because artists felt they had been liberated from 'imitating nature'. Part of that search now included letters of words in painting. Some of the discrimination may be subtle, or so ingrained, that it is no longer noticed. Women in the visual arts have largely been presented, or shown, as "being gazed upon;" not until the nineteenth century did the model even begin to gaze back at the viewer. When this did happen of course, the pubic in general was shocked at the artist's audacity for "allowing" the woman to gaze back.
