Comparison of Attitudes Toward Sex and Love as Found in the Ancient Chinese and Egyptian Love Songs and Poems

This is a 5 page paper comparing the difference in the attitudes toward sex and love in the ancient Chinese and Egyptian love poems and songs. Ancient songs and poetry written around the 1,000 B.C. vary greatly from culture to culture. The Chinese lyric poetry found in “The Book of Songs” tells of lovers and passion which are retrained by honor and of the conservative exchange of gifts during courtship. The lovers are restless but willing to wait to honor the fair and beautiful maidens. Egyptian poetry however, also written around 1,000 B.C. has a completely different style. The themes and words of the poems are much more erotic based and rather than conservative courtship are much more liberal in their attitude toward sex where the women are also active participants. These two different approaches are highly reflective of the Chinese and Egyptian cultures during this time period. The Chinese “Book of Songs” is considered as a text which depicts the morals valued by the Chinese culture while the Egyptian love poems reflect the Egyptian culture at the time where men and women interacted on a more liberal level and their society accepted erotica as found in other artifacts of that time period. The manner by which issues are addressed in Asian-American media provides one with a significantly better understanding of just how difficult a time myriad Asians have had while attempting to reconstruct their entire cultural existence. Various media formats have adopted a perspective on Asian ethnocentricity in such a way as to clearly illustrate these challenges, with film, television and print offering much the same viewpoints. The vast issues that are presented compare to historical depiction by way of carrying forth the continuing difficulties that exist within Asian-American populations, inasmuch as historical communities reflected much the same obstacles that exist within contemporary society. When one examines the importance of such media attention with regard to the Asian-American society, literary contribution is one area that cannot be overlooked, and Amy Tan is one writer who is at the forefront of accurate depiction.
