Besides being a government and economic advisor to Presidents Roosevelt, Kennedy and Johnson, Galbraith has written a great deal about the destructiveness of capitalism and consumerism within American society; a perspective which is not only controversial but not well accepted by the monopolies and big businesses of today. More recently, Galbraith has taken a stance against the growing concern of globalization and believes that too is destructive to the poor within society. Today, Galbraith considers American democracy to be one of “a democracy of the fortunate” and since the collapse of several of the large monopolies, like Enron, is aware that his book “The Affluent Society” written in 1958 could be as relevant in today’s world as it was almost fifty years ago.
