In addition to educational requirements, counselors must be skilled in many aspects of treatment and therapies including individual, group and family therapies as well as many techniques which include motivational therapy, relapse prevention, the Matrix-Model, supportive-expressive therapy, behavioral therapies and most recently recreational therapeutic programs in addition other external support programs such as the well proven 12-step programs introduced by Alcoholic Anonymous.
