School Vouchers
[ send me this paper ]
A 7 page paper discussing the issue of school vouchers, particularly the lack
of empirical evidence that voucher systems truly have any beneficial effect on educational
outcomes. The paper also discusses the positions of George W. Bush and Al Gore. Though their
benefits may not be empirically verifiable, the fact remains that vouchers and other alternatives
have the support of families using them. Parental involvement is an ongoing problem for many
urban schools, and it may be that vouchers' primary benefit could be that of enabling involved
parents to take an increased role in their children's education. It is reasonable for the mainstream
public school system to be opposed to school choice, but it is also reasonable to expect some
alternatives to have highly positive results. Bibliography lists 6 sources.

School Vouchers: What If?
[ send me this paper ]
A 13 page paper discussing the issue of school vouchers and
containing all the information of the 7 page paper of similar name. This much longer version
includes a section speculating on the organization that would evolve in a fully-functional
voucher-oriented school. Additional issues addressed in this version are: (1) how a true voucher
system would affect the teacher/administrator relationship; (2) how teachers' and administrators'
roles in the urban community might change; and (3) how teachers' and administrators' roles in the
larger school system would change. Points discussed include accountability for both student
achievement and financial resource use. Bibliography lists 6 sources.

Schools / Urban vs. Suburban
[ send me this paper ]
A 3 page argument in which the writer posits that the reason many people are not satisfied with urban schools is evidently resulting from the reasons that people are not satisfied with urban areas in general. As Americans have shifted so abruptly to the suburbs, the nation's cities have been left to fall apart and so has everything in them- including their schools. And when education is poor, the remaining affluent pack up and leave the city as well; creating a cycle of cause and effect. Now that there is so little left in inner-cities, urban schools are not able to offer the attractive services that suburban schools are. Statistics and case examples are analyzed to support points made. Bibliography lists 4 sources.

Schools: Instruments Of The Dominance Groups That Control The State
[ send me this paper ]
6 pages in length. Schools, as institutions of the state, are therefore instruments of the dominance groups that control the state. For all the current talk about tolerance and multicultural awareness by educators, schools actually reinforce the norms and expectation of the group that controls them, which, in the case of the United States, is the white middle/upper class. In other words, schools are not neutral with respect to their definitions of such terms as "proper behavior" or "academic achievement." The groups that control the schools control these definitions; thus, children in schools are presented with a dilemma: adopt the norms and behaviors of the dominance group in order to "succeed" at school or be classified as failures. This dilemma is the source of the disappointing and disturbing overall performance of children of color in public schools, especially in urban schools. The extent to which Latino students, for example, are educationally paralyzed due to the dominance group impact has been noted more and more by educators who are taking a stand against academic segregation. Bibliography lists 5 sources.

Separation of Church and State.
[ send me this paper ]
(5 pp) It is essential that it be understood that
separation of church and state, also in the First
Amendment, is a means of protecting religious
liberty by assuring that the government does not
improperly support one religion over another or all
religions over no religions. Separation church and
state is not a technical concept, then, but one
that goes deeply to the safeguarding of liberty in
this country. Bibliography lists 4 sources.

[ send me this paper ]

Contends that due to the complexity of modern society, sexual promiscuity is a fact of life for many children and must be addressed. Should Kids With AIDS Be Allowed To Attend Public Schools?
[ send me this paper ]
6 pages in length. In 1985, people in parts of the country were approaching hysteria at the thought of children with AIDS attending the same public schools with their own children. Today, we know better than to think that the disease can spread through casual contact. Many school systems have put into place AIDS awareness and prevention programs to which the AIDS-infected student can be a valuable asset, and the affected children themselves need the security and acceptance of routine and friendship. The paper concludes that kids with AIDS certainly should be allowed in the public schools, that their presence can benefit all. Bibliography lists 17 sources. AIDS-kid.RTF

Should Schools Include More Religion In The Curriculum?
[ send me this paper ]
5 pages in length. Teaching religion to schoolchildren provides them with the opportunity to broaden their otherwise restricted perception of the world. It has become a method of incorporating their own faith with those of other belief systems, a concept that is being utilized as a means by which to demonstrate the similarities between and among global faiths. Furthermore, learning about such controversial issues as creationism alongside the theory of evolution allows students to impart their own reasoning and decide which explanation better suits their personal beliefs. Bibliography lists 5 sources.
