Hobbes, Aquinas And Plato: The Role Of Morality In
Establishing An Obligation To Obey Law
[ send me this paper ]
7 pages in length. Ever since the time when mankind
required the inclusion of law as a means by which to settle disputes and create a more agreeable community, the issue of legal infiltration has been the subject of myriad dissatisfied individuals who believe that the implementation of law has been significantly more detrimental than beneficial. Others, however, contend that without the presence of law, human morality would not stand on its own
as a deterrent to crime and otherwise unwanted social behavior. Thomas Hobbes, St. Thomas Aquinas and Plato postulated the issues surrounding the role of morality in establishing an obligation to obey law; from these three men, one can readily surmise that law most certainly has a place within society's civil framework. Human Values: Importance, Rank and Roles
[ send me this paper ]
This is a 5 page paper discussing different human values and their importance in terms of individuals’ roles. The importance of different human values differs a great deal depending on the role of an individual and the priority given to values in relation to that role. Richard Wallis has defined a set of “five stem values” of right conduct, peace, truth, love and non-violence. Within each of the five stem values are additional sub-values which are also considered depending upon the role of an individual. Most individuals are family members and citizens and must therefore realize that the responsible values for such roles depend on their right conduct in addition to the value of love within a family situation. Employees and students however may feel that different values are more important in these roles in which case right conduct, truth and non-violence will lead not only to a reliable and dedicated worker but one who is aware of the respect for others within their working and school environments. The role of a friend differs again in regards to the most important values. Like family members, friends value love but they also value right conduct, truth, peace and non-violence in addition to care, consideration and generosity. Clearly, the voluntary role of a friend is one of the most important with one of the most comprehensive aspects of human value.

Hypothetical Ethical Issue with Reference to Moral Egoism and Moral Absolutism
[ send me this paper ]
This is a 3 page paper discussing moral egoism and moral absolutism in regards to a hypothetical ethical dilemma. A hypothetical ethical issue is presented which deals with the philosophies of moral egoism and moral absolutism in regards to discussing possible actions in the case of Rose. Rose asks a friend for advice as to whether or not she should have an affair within marriage based on her unusual circumstances of caring for her husband who has been paralyzed for the past six years. Rose states she is a religious person and her religion has taught her that adultery is immoral. From a moral absolutist perspective then, if she had an affair her actions would be considered immoral. Moral egoism however, promotes the happiness of the individual which Rose believes may be the result of the sexual fulfillment she will gain by having an affair. Both aspects are examined in regards to Rose’s situation and a possible solution given by her friend.

Identity and Reproductive Technology
[ send me this paper ]
This is a 4 page paper discussing the ideas of identity through the ongoing controversy of reproductive technology. Identity in today’s culture has become skewed in relation to the increasing technological possibilities in reproduction and the continued quest for the ideal American dream. Eugenics, or selective breeding, has been the basis for considerable controversy for over seventy years yet reproductive technology continues to expand. Today’s technologies can offer researchers control over genetic characteristics in which the genes carrying congenital defects can be identified, altered or removed. While this is intended to create a healthier population, reproductive technology is also considered as a way to pre-select desirable traits for future generations; the problem being who will be the ones to decide which traits are desirable? In the 1920s, Chesterton discussed the protection of American identity through eugenics while Albee’s play in the 1960s “The American Dream” tells how the American identity has become one of superficial and materialistic values. Most recently, McGee in his text “The Perfect Baby” points out that regardless of any advances in reproductive technology, social influences will always overpower them.
