The Puritans of England and New England
[ send me this paper ]
This is a 5 page paper discussing the Puritans in England and New England. The Puritans were originally known as non-conformists to the Church of England (or the Anglican Church in America) in that they stripped away much of the administrative hierarchy, “popery”, religious symbols and icons to the basic belief that only God could make religious ministers and that the Bible was the “Lord’s revealed word”. Because much of their religion was based on the interpretation and understanding of the Bible, Puritan leaders were well educated scholars and also promoted education in their communities. While many Puritans came over from England in the early 1600s with the Pilgrims, more joined the new communities when the Act of Uniformity was passed in England in 1662 which dismissed and punished any ministers not conforming to the guidelines of the Church of England and using the Book of Common Prayer. Once in New England the Puritans began to established authoritarian communities under their leaders and also established many of the educational school systems still in existence today. Bibliography lists 2 sources.

The Qualities of Character as Found in the Writings of William Bradford and John Winthrop
[ send me this paper ]
This is a 5 page paper discussing the qualities of character found in William Bradford’s “Of Plymouth Plantation, 1620-1647” and John Winthrop’s “Model of Christian Charity, 1630”. Both men sailed to the New World to set up Christian based communities which were independent of the English Church. Bradford’s journal documents the first thirty years of the Plymouth community and in addition to promoting the ideals of equality, liberty and the following of the Gospel, also deals with issues of corruption and the nature of man. Winthrop’s “model” was written on his voyage over and provides a much more idealistic look at a model Christian community. Elements of inequality of class and differences must continue within a structure of a community, Winthrop argues, but these differences are superceded by the virtues given to men by God such as sympathy, mercy, sensitivity and charity between the classes and within the Christian community which is based on the real love between Christians. Bibliography lists 4 sources.

The Salem Witch Trials of 1692
[ send me this paper ]
This is a 7 page paper discussing the background, main people and developments of the Salem witch trials of 1692. The Salem witch trials of 1692 are known throughout history as one of the most tragic occurrences of religious fanaticism overtaking a community. What appeared to be started by several young girls acting childishly against the restrictions imposed on them in their village ended in hundreds of people being accused, jailed and many executed for witchcraft. In Puritan Salem however, components of the religion did not allow for childish behavior as children were expected to act as piously as adults but did allow for the existence of witches; a combination which proved to be fatal for those accused and the community itself. Bibliography lists 5 sources.

The Scarlet A as in Letter.
[ send me this paper ]
(8pp). We have been told that cultures with more complex ideas, more readily responded to the development of a written language. Not only was writing used for the keeping of records in these early societies, but it was also used for religious purposes and socio-economic functions. We might say where the Church and State were tied together, early alphabets and language forms also existed. I would say that the Puritans tied the Church and State tightly together, and felt mandated to do so, such actions are certainly shown in Hawthorne's Scarlet Letter.

The United States Of America: Consequences Of Colonialism In California
[ send me this paper ]
7 pages in length. Spanish and Mexican settlement of California ended up the same as so many other colonization attempts: the native Indian populations were ultimately uprooted from their homeland and either relocated or slowly phased out of existence. That the Spanish and Mexican governments may have originally wanted to pursue California in both a stable and harmonious way was not achieved by any stretch of the imagination, inasmuch as the presence of war, indigenous denial and brute force was employed as a means by which to attain their final objective. Bibliography lists 7 sources.
