A Comparative Perspective on Mexicans and Cubans in the US
[ send me this paper ]
An 8 page paper discussing conditions in the US during the mid-1800s and then jumping 100 years forward to examine immigration patterns since 1959. Demographers predicted long ago that Hispanics collectively would comprise the largest minority within the US by the turn of the century, and such has proven to be true. What they failed to predict is the dichotomy with which these two groups are viewed. The Anglos immigrated to areas already occupied by both Native Americans and Mexicans, and treated each equally poorly. There was little notice of immigrants from Cuba settling in the Tampa area in the 19th century, and they were able to more closely preserve their traditional culture. Bibliography lists 11 sources.

America: Shaped by Pre-history
[ send me this paper ]
A 5 page paper discussing the ways in which the first to arrive in America between 20,000 and 30,000 years ago have served to shape today’s American civilization and national culture. The paper discusses the resolve that they certainly must have had in leaving everything known for everything unknown, then using in the new places only those things available to them in the new environment. Asian cultures are enigmatic in their reverence for their ancestors, and it remains a fact that Westerners often dismiss. Ancestry does direct the paths of the future, however. Our pre-history, Renaissance and colonial ancestry well serves the world’s only “mongrel” country, one made up of many ancestral strains, all of which have proven to represent magnificent stock. The paper also includes a discussion of American reaction to Pearl Harbor and the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. Bibliography lists 4 sources.

American Dream in L.A.
[ send me this paper ]
In the fifties, the 'age of suburbia', the American dream was epitomized by the ability to own a home, live in safety and in a community of like minded souls. The great exodus from the cities to the suburbs defined the American idea of 'the good life'. This 5 page paper suggests that while the belief in the American Dream is closely aligned to the growth and popularity of suburbs, Los Angeles is a perfect example of how suburbs were the precursor to a geographical division based on race and class. Bibliography lists 5 sources.

American Foreign Policy in Asia 1850-1950
[ send me this paper ]
A 5 page paper tracing US involvement in Asia during this 100-year period. By 1950, the US was wary of the new communist government on mainland China, but it maintained the position as a benevolent protector of Japan, Taiwan and the Philippines, which promised strategic positioning. The US represented a largely silent threat to dictatorial forces in Asia, a force that promised to lie dormant unless there was need for it to arise. With the memory of World War II so very fresh, none of the more oppressive forces in Asia doubted that the US would act if it believed action to be necessary. Bibliography lists 1 source.
