Data Concerning the 'Old South'
[ send me this paper ]
(9 pp) When we think of the Civil War, we tend to
simply divide the country into the North and the
South. However, when Lincoln was inaugurated in
March of 1861, seven states made up the 'Lower
South:' South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Alabama,
Mississippi, Louisiana, and Texas--had seceded
from the Union. But the four states of the 'Upper
South'--Virginia, North Carolina, Tennessee, and
Arkansas--had not yet joined the original seven.
Missouri, Kentucky, and Maryland were considered
border-states. In this discussion we will be
considering the problems of urbanization, economic
development, and levels of nationalism in these
Southern states.
