Should Acme Doors Eliminate Inspection?

Acme Doors manufactures garage doors that have been found to vary widely in final weight in the plant, a matter that can affect long-term performance and customers’ views of the level of quality of the product. A tenet of TQM is that quality increases as manufacturing efforts are increasingly brought within statistical control. A study sampling final product indicates that Acme’s manufacturing process will need to be refined before it eliminates product inspection in trying to implement TQM in its production activities. Solomon Lefschetz

Space Age Mathematics Education

A 20 page paper discussing the relationship between reforms in math education in the 1960s and 1970s and conditions in the space program. The Soviet Union launched Sputnik in 1957, and then was the first to put a man in space in 1961. Alan Shepard became the first American in space only three weeks later, but he did not orbit the Earth as the Russian astronaut did. Technological innovation and national embarrassment gave impetus to the change in math education in the early 1960s and the shift to New Math, but we allowed the pendulum to swing too far in the US. Further technological innovation and the reality of poor performance on an international level now is giving impetus to additional change, one approaching more of a middle ground. Statistically Assessing Quality at Wilson Tire

Winston Tire Company claims its new tires last for 40,000 miles. This is presented not as a guarantee of minimum mileage purchasers can expect, but rather as an average. An independent testing agency has tested Wilson tires and found them lacking, but the truth is that the study is so poorly designed that the agency cannot make any definitive determination about the quality of Wilson tires.
