Bipolar Disorder: Symptoms, Diagnosis, Treatments and Legal, Ethical and Cultural Considerations
[ send me this paper ]
This is a 9 page paper discussing the symptoms, diagnosis, treatments and legal, ethical and cultural considerations in the treatment of bipolar disorder. Bipolar disorder, also known as manic depression, currently affects over 2 million people in the United States. The disorder consists of a combination of mania, hypomania, and depression. The current edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-IV) provides a good outline for clinicians and psychiatrists to diagnose the disorder and recommendations for treatment of symptoms for patients with bipolar disorder. However, further research in the area of mental illness also stresses the need for therapists and clinicians during the treatment of the disorder to take into consideration the stresses of the family members, medical ethical and legal issues in the treatment of mental illness, as well as race, age, gender, socio-economic and cultural issues which may also play a large role in the treatment of a patient with bipolar disorder and the general mental health of the society.

Brain Attack: The Silent Stroke Form
[ send me this paper ]
A 26 page research proposal. The
existence of silent stroke has been known for years, but recent findings indicate that it could be
epidemic in the US. Silent stroke formerly was believed to have no bearing on whether an
individual would later suffer an acute and symptomatic brain attack that possibly could result in
lasting disability, but current research indicates that silent stroke is indeed a predictor of
subsequent symptomatic stroke. This research proposal reviews the evolution of treatment
guidelines, lists risk factors and provides a review of literature addressing silent stroke. Appendix
contains a survey instrument and several charts and tables. Bibliography lists 13 sources.

Breast Cancer and Hormone Replacement Therapy
[ send me this paper ]
This 20 page
report discusses the fact that postmenopausal estrogen
replacement therapy (ERT) has been repeatedly linked with breast
cancer. Some studies show no increased risk for breast cancer.
Others suggest there may be a slight increased risk, while still
others say that there is an increased risk, but that it is
minimal and occurs only after ten or more years of use. Numerous
research efforts that have shown that estrogen use is clearly
connected to an increased risk of uterine, endometrial, and
breast cancers. However, such factors must be weighed against
the fact that estrogen significantly reduces a woman's chances of
developing osteoporosis and can act as a defender against
cardiovascular disease. Bibliography lists 16 sources.

6 pages in length.
