Food Preferences & PWS/article critique
[ send me this paper ]
A 5 page review of a research article that details the study conducted by Fieldstone, et al (1997). In this study, the research team explored the food preferences of patients suffering from Prader-Willi syndrome (who are typically obese), as compared with those of volunteers with normal weight and obese controls not afflicted with PWS. The study found distinct differences in their food choices, which suggests lines for future research. No additional sources cited.

A special emphasis is placed on suicide, describing the criteria a medical examiner uses to determine if a death was suicide. Bibliography lists 5 sources.

Full Mouth Disinfection Compared to Partial Mouth Disinfection
[ send me this paper ]
This 6 page report discusses research findings regarding full-mouth disinfection (FMD). FMD requires that instrumentation, subgingival, buccal mucosa and tongue disinfection all be completed within 24 hours. The concept is based on the idea that in the most common strategy for periodontal treatment that involves consecutive root planings per single quadrant of the mouth at a one- to two-week intervals, re-infection of a disinfected area might occur before completion of the treatment. The standard procedure is generally referred to as “partial mouth disinfection.” Bibliography lists 6 sources.

G Protein Function
[ send me this paper ]
A 5 page paper discussing the function of G proteins, with an emphasis in GTPase and G protein receptor sites. G proteins have been found to be involved in a vast number of processes involving hormonal and drug therapy activity and are extensively involved in message transmission. GTPase inhibits those processes, and the mechanisms by which many of these interactions take place still are not well described. In part due to the sheer numbers of processes in which G proteins have roles and in part because they each have their own pharmacology while sharing similar structures, full description is likely to provide a wealth of research opportunity for some time to come. Bibliography lists 10 sources.

Gender Differences In Heart Disease
[ send me this paper ]
A 10 page paper with three sections. The first section is a study regarding the differences between men and women in regards to symptoms and treatment of heart disease. This section includes an introduction, purpose of the study, problem statement, hypotheses, literature review, type of study, and conclusion. Gene Therapy for Cystic Fibrosis
[ send me this paper ]
A 5 page paper discussing the status of gene therapy for the treatment or prevention of cystic fibrosis. Cystic fibrosis is an autosomal recessive disorder caused by mutations in the gene encoding the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator protein (CFTR). Mutations at this site lead to a variety of associated symptoms, and those with the disease have an expected life span of only 25 years. Gene therapy has had successful clinical trials in adults, but the real debate centers around the possibility (and ethics) of in utero gene therapy. Bibliography lists 9 sources.

Genetic Expression in Cancer
[ send me this paper ]
A 12 page paper discussing the actions and implications of genes p53 and pRB, and the enzyme telomerase in the control of cancer. Genes p53 and pRB are known to be tumor suppressor genes, inhibiting the ability of cancerous cells to thrive. Over half of all cancers reveal that the p53 gene has either been disabled or has been dismantled at the cellular level. Telomerase is an enzyme found most abundantly in association with cancerous conditions, preventing the shortening of chromosomal 'endcaps,' telomeres, that happens in normal cell growth and division. The enzyme prevents the shortening of the telomeres, prolonging the life of the cell. Telomerase provides the best indicator of cancerous conditions present and is measurable before there are any symptoms at all. Bibliography lists 10 sources.

Genetically Engineered Food
[ send me this paper ]
A 2 page paper discussing the true meaning of "genetic engineering" as it applies to food. Genetic engineering is more threatening in its name than in its purpose. It is the precise and predictable altering of plants to achieve specific characteristics, the same goal of plant breeding for specific traits. Environmentalist groups complain of the possibilities inherent in genetic engineering, but they often fail to understand the true goals of the practice. Bibliography lists 4 sources.

Genetically Engineered Food: The Conflicts Surrounding Claims of its Necessity for Feeding the World's Increasing Population
[ send me this paper ]
This 6 page paper provides an overview of the conflicts that have been raised about the use of genetically engineered food and the necessity for feeding the world's hungry. This paper not only assesses the history of genetic engineering, but also considers the impact of what has been described as terminator technology on Third World nations. Bibliography lists 7 sources.
