Symbolism of "Raisin in the Sun"
[ send me this paper ]
(5 pp) Symbols have been with us forever. It seems that there is something in the human that responds to symbols -it is the re-membering - the putting of an image with an idea. For example there might be many images that could be related to the idea of "hope." But it is the idea of hope, that for some reason in our busy lives that we seem to forget. A symbol helps us reconnect with those ideas that are ultimately important for us. That is also true in the case of Lorraine Hansberry's 1959 New York Drama Critics Circle Award winning play, "A Raisin in the Sun."

Symbols and Symbolism as Indicative of Key Themes in Ibsen’s “A Doll’s House” and Anouilh’s “Antigone”
[ send me this paper ]
This is a 7 page paper discussing symbols and symbolism in relation to the themes found in Henrik Ibsen’s play “A Doll’s House” and Jean Anouilh’s play “Antigone”. Both Ibsen in “A Doll’s House” and Anouilh in “Antigone” use symbolism to express themes throughout their plays. The central characters of Nora and Antigone are both seen as childish in their use of childhood items such as Nora playing hide and seek and Antigone using a small shovel and child’s clothing. Their symbolism is much deeper however as both characters also symbolize the societies at the time the plays were written. Nora’s character is constantly being referred to using animal imagery and her hiding of objects from her husband depicts the theme of her inequality in her household and the inequality of women in the 1800s. Antigone’s character symbolizes the French resistance and the sacrifice she had to make to remain true to her ideals against the oppressive king, or in France’s case, the occupying Germans. Bibliography lists 7 sources.

Tennessee Williams -- Postmodern Writer
[ send me this paper ]
This 6 page report discusses the American writer and dramatist, Tennessee Williams (1911-1983) and the ways in which his work and his life can be defined as postmodern. Part of the power of the modernist movement in 20th century literature was the force, or the will of the artist, which is presented in the writing and is imprinted on the reader. Williams’ powerful characters and their interactions served to illustrate the postmodern reality of 20th century life. In fact, Williams’ entire life and art was a model of postmodernism in terms of his upbringing, lifestyle, artistry, and creative synthesis of individual circumstances that highlighted the universality of pain in the modern world. Bibliography lists 5 sources.
