Forensic Psychology

5 pages in length. The field of psychology is comprised of many subcategories in order to address various and distinct aspects in a more appropriate way. Forensic psychology is somewhat different from other sectors of the field by virtue of its intrinsic connection to the criminal justice system, an alliance that provides for better understanding of "the vast psychological perspectives" (Diviny et al, 2000) inherent to the law. More than that, however, is the fact that forensic psychology deals in myriad aspects of the legal component, not the least of which include helping to set policy and create laws, determining offender competency, establishing a defendant's mental condition at the time when the crime was committed, criminal profiling, attorney consultation for jury selection, treating mentally unstable offenders, acting as expert witness in court and "analyzing a criminal's mind and intent" (Diviny et al, 2000). Forensic Psychology: Issues of Morality and Justice

A 5 page overview of the role forensic psychologists play in issues of morality and justice. Notes that in effect forensic psychology is a court of law, a system designed to weigh the mental processes of some against those of the masses. Psychology is really a means of justification, the presentation of evidence or facts which support our views or beliefs. This "evidence" or "fact" varies considerably, however, according to what arena it is presented. A rigid testing and diagnostic regime is therefore critical to justice. The issues of morality and justice are integrally tied to the “court of law” of forensic psychology. Imaginary Homicide Crime Scene

The call came in to the Arson Investigation Department just after 9 pm Monday evening that: A seventy-year-old woman had been found dead in her home by a suspected explosive device. Upon arrival, the first thing the investigator noted in the overall attempt to recognize, document, collect, preserve and analyze the physical evidence was the distinct post-explosive odor attributed to detonation aftermath. The next door neighbor was immediately at the investigator's side offering details as she knew them, only one of which was of any actual benefit: The fresh, clear print of a man's athletic shoe was identified in the flowerbed just outside the front door. This was a potentially critical piece of information inasmuch as the elderly woman lived alone, had no sons or brothers, and was not seeing anyone. Bibliography lists 5 sources.
