The author of this paper contends that Jackson had a tendency to justify his actions and even to sugar coat them so that they appeared to be in the best interest not only of the white population which had elected him to office but also in the best interest of the people he was, in reality, dealing with so harshly. Specifically considered are the men themselves and who they were, where they came from and why they joined the fight; the job of a common foot soldier; why Rhodes and Watkins chose to write about their wartime experiences; how each was affected by the war, particularly its death and destruction; how Watkins felt about the Southern cause and the war; why these books are important to historians and evaluates whether or not one has more value than the other since one was written while the war was going on, while the other was written twenty years later.
